Web Design Trends for 2017

The designers here at Cool Jazz Web Design Studio are always on the lookout for the latest in website design and where those trends will be taking us. Looking forward allows us to build a site for you or your business that will not look dated before it even goes live. So many website builders pay no attention to design trends and thus produce websites that can look several years old as soon as they are launched. Having a dated website that doesn’t conform to the latest standards and paradigms can cause your users to click away and move on to a site that works better on their devices. As more and more web browsing moves to mobile devices, it is vital that web designers and developers keep up with the latest design trends to enable the best user interface and experience on the latest devices.

Use of SVG’s

What is an SVG? SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. It is a language for describing two-dimensional graphics in XML (eXtensible Markup Language). The SVG standard allows for three types of objects: Vector Graphics, Text and Images.

SVG is important in web design because it is cross browser compatible and scalable. That means it works no matter which modern browser you choose to use and is also platform independent, meaning it will work on windows machines or Mac’s. It is also an open standard, so no one has control over its implementation and features. An example of a proprietary application would be Adobe Reader. Even though it is ubiquitous across the web for sharing documents, it is controlled by Adobe and anyone that utilizes its functionality is dependent on Adobe for keeping it available.

Look for ever greater implementations of SVG in web design in 2017. Its compatibility and mobile friendly features is increasing its popularity everyday.

Here is an example of SVG using only HTML:

Sorry, your browser does not support inline SVG.

Big and Bold Type

Big and Bold Type is pretty much just like it sounds. Not all of the text on your website will be big and bold, but eye catching headlines and titles will trend to the big and beautiful with bright eye catching colors. Non web standard colors are becoming more and more prevalent, and bright colors that pop are definitely becoming a major feature and design element for 2017.

Animations

Animations in web design, really started to take off in 2016 and that design trend is only going to rapidly expand in 2017. Animations can be created with SVG as we discussed above, video, WebGL CSS or the old standby, gif’s. Animations combined with bright and bold colors and type, will make for an eye-popping design year in web sites for 2017. We might all just need to turn down the brightness on our monitors before its all over :-).
